After finishing a late brunch and swapping stories with a few of the other guests, the Dead Oaks Paranormal Society was proud to find they'd had the most success at contacting the spirits of the Captain's Inn. Some had claimed to hear voices, which could've easily been other guests. One woman swore she'd seen the little boy, Noah, at her beside just as the innkeepers had described.

But only D.O.P.S. left with recorded evidence.

Liv handed out business cards and invited them all to check out the footage on their website after she posted it in the upcoming week.

“Well, if nothing else then at least we'll come out of this trip with a few extra fans,” Liv said as they drove down the highway to their next destination.

Wes fixed his hair in the passenger mirror. “I'm not in this for the fans.”

Liv rolled her eyes. “So says Mr. Broadway Ingenue.”

A nerve struck, Wes narrowed his eyes.

Tony chuckled.

Jasper glanced in the rear-view and noticed Liv smiled along with him.

Now was prime opportunity to set Mission: Alone-Time into motion.

“I should probably refuel soon. There's an old downtown shopping district on the way that's supposed to be nice. Maybe we could kill some time there until the sun goes down before we head to the Vampire Hills?”

“Whoa, you're taking us somewhere that's actually called Vampire Hills?” Tony was suddenly Mr. Cautious. “That's pretty intense. Why have I never heard of it?”

“Vampire Hills is just a nickname the locals gave it,” Jasper explained.

Wes flipped his mirror shut at the first sign he could play expert and chimed in. “Yeah, it's actually Downs Hill but is home to a haunted roadway and in close proximity to an old cemetery with a history of vampirism.”

“Allegedly,” Jasper corrected.

Wes looked over his shoulder into the backseat at Tony and Liv. He smiled as though he knew his smirk housed some long lost secret. “Allegedly, Downs Hill was attacked by vampires in the mid 1800s so the townspeople started digging up bodies and burning them. Proof: vampire problems solved.”

“Turns out cremation is helpful in stopping the spread of tuberculosis along with potential vampires,” Jasper felt the need to add.

“Gross.” Liv gave her attention back to her phone. Jasper assumed she was probably fact-checking them.

“So, if there aren't really vampires then why are we going there?” Tony asked.

Wes was happy to answer. “Because in the many years since there have been multiple reports of ghosts, inhuman cries, and possible demonic activity. Occasionally, some people have even claimed to see a giant black dog.”

“Our country does have an overpopulation problem with strays,” Liv pointed out matter-of-factually. “Spay and neuter your pets, people.”

Jasper noticed Tony stare out of his window with a similar nervous expression to the one he'd had the night before in the Captain's Inn kitchen.

“Are you scared of ghosts, Tony?” he asked.

Wes and Liv both looked to Tony eagerly. Jasper was sure they were just frothing at the mouths for a chance to harass him if it were true.

“What? No.” Tony pulled his attention back to the group.
